In 1902, un cercetator francez a inventat primul aparat de electrostimulare musculara, pe care l-a folosit cu succes pentru a trata atrofia musculara. 70 de ani mai tarziu, experimentele a doi cercetatori rusi, Kotz si Chwilon, au demonstrat o crestere de pana la 30-40% a puterii musculare, cu eforturi minime fiziologice si mentale intr-o perioada de timp scurta. De atunci acesta metoda a fost folosita pentru a trata diferitele dezechilibre musculare, si pentru a imbunatati performanta in cazul sportivilor profesionisti. Actualmente, acest tip de antrenament, bazat pe electrostimulare musculara, se practica in intreaga lume, fiind tot mai popular pe zi ce trece.
